Summary of Content
The opening chapter provides images and information on how to recognise the rainforest types in existence today. This is followed by an illustrated time scale that takes the reader through the evolution of Australian rainforests. The sequence of book chapters reflects the evolutionary succession of plants, together with fungi, lichen and slime moulds, and demonstrates that rainforests are self-sustaining ecosystems, which rely on a myriad of associations to reproduce and survive. Chapters include; mosses, mushrooms, lichens, slime moulds, ferns, conifers, flowering trees, climbing plants, orchids and palms. The different reproductive methods of organisms are explained and illustrated using informative graphics. Colour plates of widely distributed species, being characteristic for their family or genus, give practical information and together with illustrative photos enable the reader to recognise common rainforest plant and fungi species found in Australian rainforests. The ‘Practical Section’ explains how to use vegetative plant features, such as; leaves, flowers, bark and fruit to identify native rainforest trees and plants. A list of useful online resources and books for further reading is provided in the bibliography.

Easy to use identification keys to the major plant groups and fungi are provided.

The book is written in a comprehensible, engaging style and employs descriptive illustrations and photos to raise the interest into the great diversity, primeval origins and uniqueness of Australian rainforests. The many beautiful images are taken from the author’s own collection which has been built up over many decades.

Testimonials
“Both volumes are of an exceedingly high and excellent standard. The depth of investigation, research, information and photography must be studied by the reader in order to be fully appreciated. There is obviously a lifetime of knowledge and appreciation of Rainforest in the Author's works. In this era of climate change, Peter's books will be a treasure in any person's library.”
Noel C.

"A treasure trove of information for non-botanists. I bought this book blind on a recommendation. It is very good indeed. Written for the amateur enthusiast it is well thought out and presented. I have never seen a book of this length & genre delve into more than shrubs & trees but this one does - fungi and even slime-moulds get chapters and more. An important contribution to something that is still being (slowly) lost."
Emerald G.
